Labour Youth to Participate in National Youth Council of Ireland Budget 2015 Debate

Labour Youth Chairperson Ciaran Garrett, will debate with the political youth wing chairs at this evening’s National Youth Council of Ireland, Budget 2015 Debate.

Speaking ahead of the debate this evening Labour Youth Chairperson Ciaran Garrett commented “I would like to thank the NYCI for organising this debate. It’s vitally important that young people have a forum to debate ideas on how to improve our society. Young people are the future for our country and we need to be politically engaged to help build a better future. Young people have been particularly effected by the recession. That’s why it’s all the more important young people have a say in proposing solutions on how to improve our society.”

“Labour Youth believes it does not make economic and social sense for more cuts and regressive measures in this upcoming budget. Labour Youth wants to see that economic recovery is made feel real for people right across the country. Economic recovery cannot just be felt by wealthy elites.”

“Among a host of other measures in our budget submission, Labour Youth is proposing that the minimum wage is increased to €10. Increasing the minimum wage will help tackle the growing problem of low pay in our society and also stimulate economic growth. We also want to see reform of the VAT system to make it more progressive. We are also proposing a Financial Transaction Tax, Betting Tax and an increase in the Inheritance Tax to fund public services.”

“I am looking forward to debating these proposals this evening with the other youth wing chairs and hearing suggestions from audience members. I believe Labour Youth has compiled a well thought out, detailed budget submission on how to deliver a socially just economic recovery.”
