Youth rate of minimum wage should be scrapped

LY FOW 2

Young people are subject to sub-minima rates under the National Minimum Wage Act. This means that young workers are given a different rate of minimum wage based solely on their age.
• A worker under the age of 18 is only entitled to 70% of the national minimum wage.
• A worker in their first year of employment over the age of 18 is only entitled to 80% of the national minimum wage.
• A worker in their second year of employment over the age of 18 is only entitled to 90% of the national minimum wage.
These rates of pay are solely based on age.
This needs to end now.
