LABOUR YOUTH SUPPORTS CALL FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A LIVING WAGE

Labour Youth fully supports Senator Ged Nash in his calls for an increase from the current minimum wage of €9.55 to not just €9.80, but to the Living Wage of €11.90.

When we consider the exorbitant and skyrocketing cost of living, €9.80 is simply not enough. In 2018, workers can expect to spend a whopping third of their income on housing costs.

The cost of housing is cited as the driving force behind the most recent rise in the Living Wage.

With about 130,000 of us working minimum wage jobs, there is a sizable cohort who cannot afford to make ends meet. With society so reliant on many of the important services provided by minimum wage workers, it is time the State showed some gratitude by remunerating those workers adequately.

It is high time that a Living Wage of at least €11.90 per hour is implemented in this country and that this figure be indexed to the cost of living.
